Burma (Myanmar) – Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions Advisory Issued June 5, 2018

Exercise normal precautions in Burma. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Do not travel to:

• Maungdaw, Rathedaung, Ponnagyun, and Buthidaung townships in Rakhine State due to civil unrest.
• Paletwa township in Chin State due to civil unrest.
• Hpakan, Mansi, Momauk, Sumprabum, Tanai, and Waingmaw townships in Kachin State due to civil unrest.
• Shadaw township in Kayah State due to civil unrest.
• Hlaingbwe, Hpapun, and Thandaung townships in Kayin State due to civil unrest.
• Konkyan, Kutkai, Laukkaing, Matman, Mongmao, Namphan, Pangsang, and Pangwaun townships in Shan State due to civil unrest.

Reconsider travel to:

• Bhamo township in Kachin State due to civil unrest.
• Minbya and Mrauk-U townships in Rakhine State due to civil unrest.
• Hopang, Kyaukme, Manton, Mongkaung, Muse, Namhsan, Namtu, and Nanhkan townships in Shan State due to civil unrest.

Exercise increased caution in:

• Northern Shan State due to land mines
• Parts of Kachin, Rakhine, and Chin States due to land mines

If you decide to travel to Burma:

Townships in Rakhine, Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, and Shan States

These townships are subject to fighting between the Burmese military and armed insurgent groups. The level of risk varies significantly between townships and may change at any time.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these areas as U.S. government employees must obtain special authorization to travel to these locations.

Monitor local media for breaking events and be prepared to adjust your plans. Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance. Review information on Travel to High-Risk Areas. 

Northern Shan State, Parts of Kachin, Rakhine, and Chin States

Land mines and unexploded bombs have injured foreign tourists in conflict affected areas.

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these areas as U.S. government employees must obtain special authorization to travel to these locations.
